Star Wars: A New Hope
During the time in class we had to view Star Wars, I learned a lot of how it's connected to the religion unit we are learning this semester. Many of the examples used in this film is the fact that Darth Vader signifies "Dark Father". In this case, we are shown by the way he is dressed that he represents evil, or in other words, the devil. Additionally, Luke Skywalker, who is dressed in white, represents the good, or like someone serving god. This film comes into place with a major concept faced in religion, which is good vs. evil. Another example that is shown through the force, which is an energy field of light. This can be used either in a good way or a bad way, which is a belief of polytheistic people. A theme underlying one part of the movie is Technology vs. Religion. In this case, A massive ship with the capacity to take down an entire planet vs. the force. Darth Vader believed that the force was able to be more stronger than the weapon, since he was a Jedi Knight and believed in this other term for religion. The life of a Jedi Knight is known to be strict, since they are described as guardians of peace and justice. They represent monks in the world, by the strict lifestyle they live in. The question mainly asked in this unit is "How does religion shape the way people understand and respond to the world around them?" Through the film, I see that "religion" affects the lives of others since it makes individuals what they believe is right or wrong and where their determination should be. It divided the empire with the rebels, and what cause they fought for. Good vs. Evil. God vs. Devil.
