Hurricane Katrina and The Beginning

I believe that one of the most devastating disasters in the United States had been Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  The people dead in New Orleans had been 100,000 civilians. This hurricane also hit Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Before it was in affect, it was classified in being a category 5 hurricane, when in reality, it was a category 3. It was a major fact since due to the belief of category 5, the governor issued a mandatory evacuation for the people of New Orleans, although there had been some people that had stayed and decided to endure it. One of the questions that can be asked through the film is "How did the environment affect the people before the hurricane? During? After?" The answer can be stated that before, in 1965, there was Hurricane Betsy, with almost the same amount of capacity, so most citizens believed if they were able to survive that hurricane, they would be able to withstand this storm.  It began in the Gulf of Mexico, and hit New Orleans August 26, 2005. The storm itself began at 2:30 A.M., with all streets deserted. What had been a major affect which brought on much disaster to the city was that even though the storm itself went east and passed New Orleans, the levees built in New Orleans had collapsed. One of the important things that should be noted in this situation was that New Orleans was built 6 feet under sea level, so the only thing that prevented any water to enter was these levees, but in this case they had not been properly built by the government, they had broken and the actual destruction and deceased lives was caused by the large amount of water entering, not the hurricane since it somehow passed and turned east. During the time while the hurricane lasted, the majority of the the city was flooded and many of the citizens that had stayed there had the disadvantage of having their homes flooded, until they had nowhere else to go except to face their deaths. This had lasted for some time until the water had stopped entering and helicopters soon filled in the levees. After this, we find many bodies in homes, and the living people on the streets with nothing, and the rest trapped in the rain or struggling to survive. An additional question that can be made through the negative outcome of this hurricane is "In what ways might Katrina permanently change people's relationship with the environment?" This answer can be responded in the way people were devastated through the trail of destruction Katrina brought, and not only were afraid and sympathetic, but careful on how the environment they live in is going to be, since their major fear is mother nature. It changes how many civilians live their lives since the environment can leave a person with nothing left in their lives, and their relationship can be expressed in a negative way. The people on the gulf coast had been affected through major damage in their lives both physically and mentally. It had left each and everyone of their societies torn apart and a loss of hope of ever coming back from this major obstacle.
